" The opposite of fear is a kind of serenity, or solitary peace. Much capital is spent
creating oceans of serenity amidst the chaos of modern existence. Who doesn’t like
a fine spa, a resort hotel, or a cruise to the tropics? But fear still lurks and quietly
gathers its forces while waiting patiently for our return. The kind of serenity that is
opposed from outside may provide a temporary oasis, but it is not the answer. It is a
reaction to the fear, not an antidote.
"If we are able to find that which transcends fear and its opposite, serenity, we will
discover a dynamic and spirited calm generated from within and available everywhere,
all the time."
Let me explain further why this is so important.
Emotional health can be defined as "freedom from passion marked by a state of dynamic calm." The passion referred to is the tendency towards strong and barely controllable emotions, or outbursts. It doesn't matter if those emotions are expressed or suppressed, their unintended presence as part of an individual's disposition is what is problematic. And it matters not one whit if these emotions disappear during moments of solitude or in contrived settings, or are otherwise kept firmly under wraps by a powerful act of will. The tendency, easily sparked, or the regular presence of a stormy backdrop, is the measure.
Dynamic calm, on the other hand, is a state where there is boundless energy, but it in no way disturbs the individuals equanimity. Emotions are not anesthetized; the person is not sedated. If they are provoked emotions can rise and fall like a gentle wave that returns immediately to the sea, failing to disturb the person's basic happiness and well-being.
The ability to maintain that state under all circumstances and in all environments, or retain it quickly without lingering consequences when passions have been aroused, is the measure. That state is its own reward since the psyche recognizes and values emotional health, even if unhealthy habits have been the norm. As well, the amount of energy that is wasted on disturbing emotions is gigantic and disturbed energy means a disturbed mind and body. Emotional health is an aid to health and vitality in general.
An added bonus is that when that emotional sea is calm and still vital something sublime rises in it. The state of love emerges.
